St. Louis Public Radio is reporting Iron County Medical Center is currently in dispute with the U.S. Department of Agriculture over a rural development loan, of which the hospital still owes $7 million. Iron County Medical filed for bankruptcy protection in 2018 and creditors, Medicare and Medicaid officials and hospital leadership agreed to a five-year solvency plan. The USDA has gone to court opposing the delayed plan and insists repayment before any other creditors. Hospital CEO Joshua Gilmore said if Iron County Medical Center is forced to pay the USDA back first, the hospital is at risk of closing. The dispute is scheduled to return to court in August 2019 and a judge has ordered the two parties to continue negotiations in the meantime.
