WUSF 89.7 FM reports that Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital is bringing back prominent heart surgeon Dr. James Quintessenza as chief surgeon and co-director of the heart institute in February 2020, as a first step in restoring the shuttered program. Dr. Quintessenza had worked at the All Children's for 26 years, including 19 as medical director and chief of pediatric cardiac surgery, until he left in 2016. After Dr. Quintessenza left, death and complication rates at the heart institute increased dramatically, leading to an investigation that saw heart surgeries suspended and six hospital executives resign.
