The Tampa Bay Times is reporting the fifth veteran in five years took his own life at Bay Pines VA Medical Center on December 10, 2018. Retired Marine Col. Jim Turner, age 55, arrived at Bay Pines Department of Veterans Affairs complex in full dress uniform and took his life with a rifle. He left a suicide note stating the VA had failed to help him citing PTSD, his twenty years of service, and paid over $1,000 per month for his healthcare. Bay Pines VA Medical Center has experienced more suicides in the five years than the rest of the VA medical centers in the state combined. Nationwide, there have been 19 suicides between October 2017 and November 2018 at VA facilities. Family members state Turner may have been refused treatment at Bay Pines. The VA hospital has not issued a statement.
